Life Story

Early Life
Kateri was born into a Mohawk village and lost her parents and brother to a smallpox epidemic. The disease left her scarred and partially blind, shaping her quiet and reflective nature.

Conversion
Introduced to Christianity by Jesuit missionaries, Kateri was drawn deeply to the faith. She was baptized at age 20, taking the name Kateri (Catherine), but faced hostility and isolation for her decision.

Faith and Sacrifice
Refusing marriage and dedicating herself to Christ, Kateri lived a life of prayer, penance, and devotion. She eventually fled her village to join a Christian community in Kahnawake, where her faith flourished.

Death and Legacy
Kateri died at just 24 years old, and witnesses reported that her scars disappeared after her death. Her life became a symbol of purity, courage, and unwavering faith, leading to her canonization centuries later.
